The CAD exam targets professionals with at least six months of hands-on development experience. It covers application access controls, the automated test framework, and client-side scripting. While administrators keep the lights on and manage user permissions, developers build the custom logic that connects different business units. They use JavaScript and ServiceNow's proprietary Glide API to automate complex multi-department processes. Holding the CAD shows you can extend the platform's capabilities while adhering to ServiceNow's development best practices.
Specializing with Implementation Credentials
The Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) track is where professionals align their technical skills with specific business functions. ServiceNow offers dozens of product line modules, and no single person masters all of them. These exams test your ability to take a fresh module and configure it to match an organization's specific operational policies.
For traditional IT professionals, the CIS-ITSM (Certified Implementation Specialist - IT Service Management) is the logical next step after the CSA. It focuses on the core ITIL processes that built ServiceNow's reputation: incident, problem, change, and configuration management. Passing this exam proves you can set up service level agreements, configure the service catalog, and manage knowledge bases.
As ServiceNow expands its footprint outside the IT department, other specializations carry equal weight. The CIS-HR (Certified Implementation Specialist - Human Resources) targets professionals configuring employee onboarding, payroll inquiries, and benefits portals.
Asset tracking is another major focus area for large enterprises. The CIS-HAM (Certified Implementation Specialist – Hardware Asset Management) tests your ability to track physical corporate assets from initial procurement through final retirement, including managing stockrooms and hardware lifecycles.
Maintaining Your Credentials
ServiceNow operates on a strict bi-annual release cycle, rolling out new features and platform updates twice a year. The certification program mirrors this schedule.
Passing an exam is only the first step. To keep your certifications active, you must pass short, unproctored delta exams within a specific window after each major platform release. If you miss a delta exam window, your certification expires. You must then pay for and pass the full proctored exam again. This maintenance requirement forces certified professionals to stay current with the platform's changing architecture.
Market Value and Career Strategy
ServiceNow professionals command high salaries because the supply of qualified talent has not caught up with enterprise demand. Organizations are actively hiring administrators, developers, and architects to manage their growing platform investments.
However, collecting random certifications will not guarantee a higher billing rate. The most practical approach involves matching your certification path to the modules your employer actually licenses or the specific consulting market you want to target. If your company relies on ServiceNow to track laptops and servers, earning the CIS-HAM makes you immediately valuable to the hardware team. If your consulting firm specializes in HR portals, focusing on the CIS-HR makes more sense.
Hiring managers look for candidates who understand the business processes behind the technology. A developer who knows how to write a business rule is useful. A professional who understands the underlying IT service management framework and holds a CSA and CIS-ITSM can design solutions that align directly with the company's operational goals.
