The CSM Exam Experience
The primary entry point into the Scrum Alliance ecosystem is the CSM (Certified Scrum Master). This certification verifies your understanding of Scrum theory, artifacts, roles, and events.
Once you complete the mandatory two-day training, your instructor activates your exam profile. You then have 90 days to take the test. The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you have 60 minutes to complete it. To pass, you must score at least 74%, which means answering 37 questions correctly.
The test is administered online and is not proctored. It functions as an open-book exam, allowing you to reference the Scrum Guide and your course notes. If you fail, Scrum Alliance provides a second attempt at no extra cost, provided you take it within the initial 90-day window. Subsequent attempts incur a $25 fee.
The content distribution places the heaviest weight on the Scrum Master role itself, making up 22% of the questions. Another 20% focuses on the Scrum Team dynamics, while Events and Artifacts each account for 20%. The remaining questions cover Agile fundamentals and historical Scrum theory.
Market Position and Career Value
The CSM is a common filter in IT recruitment. Hiring managers recruiting for Agile environments often use it as a baseline requirement for project managers, delivery leads, and dedicated Scrum Masters. It proves you understand the vocabulary—sprints, daily standups, retrospectives, and the definition of done.
The credential remains valid for two years. To maintain it, Scrum Alliance requires you to earn 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) through continuous learning, such as attending local Agile community events or completing additional training. Alternatively, you can renew your status by passing a higher-level certification.
While the exam itself tests factual recall, the mandatory training model ensures that every certified individual has spent at least two days practicing the framework with a qualified instructor. The open-book format of the test reflects the reality of the role: a working Scrum Master does not rely on rote memorization, but rather on knowing how to apply Agile principles when a development team faces a blocker during a sprint.
