Question 56

An administrator has a requirement to revert a running virtual machine to a previous snapshot after a failed attempt to upgrade an application. When the administrator originally took the snapshot, the following choices in the Take Snapshot dialog were made:

Snapshot the virtual machine’s memory = false

Quiesce guest file system = false

What will be the result of the administrator selecting the “Revert to Latest Snapshot” option to return the virtual machine to a previous snapshot?

    Correct Answer: B

When taking a snapshot without capturing the virtual machine's memory, the snapshot will not include the live state of the machine, meaning the VM will be powered off upon reverting. Additionally, as the guest file system was not quiesced, this does not influence the machine's powered state. Therefore, selecting the 'Revert to Latest Snapshot' option will restore the virtual machine to the state of the parent snapshot, and it will be in a powered off state.

On the exam there is same question but with "Snapshot the virtual machine’s memory = true" then the VM will be restored in powered ON state.

I found this article for vSphere version 8: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/8.0/vsphere-esxi-host-client/GUID-CA948C69-7F58-4519-AEB1-739545EA94E5.html "Revert to Latest Snapshot: Restores the parent snapshot, one level up in the hierarchy from the You are Here position. Revert to Latest Snapshot activates the parent snapshot of the current state of the virtual machine"... I think the key is "parent snapshot of the current state" So, I think the correct option is B

Just a note, had the exam and passed, however the conditions in this questions were: Snapshot the virtual machine’s memory = TRUE Quiesce guest file system = false Just wanted to share with everyone. Other questions were 99% same, with answer order being shuffled compared to what is shown here.

This is tricky , because the "Revert to Last Snapshot " if you have another existing snap and if you take a second , then it will rever to the child one not the parent . but here the questions doesn't say anyuthing about other existing snaps

namvoiptechOption: B

From the lecture manual: "The relationship between snapshots is like the relationship between a parent and a child. Snapshots are organized in a snapshot tree. In a snapshot tree, each snapshot has one parent and one or more children, except for the last snapshot, which has no children." So definitely reverts to parent. And the powered off state has been well explained already.

B is the correct answer, as eplained here : https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/com.vmware.vsphere.hostclient.doc/GUID-E0080795-C2F0-4F05-907C-2F976433AC0D.html

tricky, as we don't know how many snapshot there is. But as it's mentionned in the answer revert to "the" parent snapshot we can imagine that there is at least another child snapshot. and as we restore to the last snapshot... it must be the child.

Answer is correct

Memory Snapshots: When you capture the virtual machine's memory state, the snapshot retains the live state of the virtual machine. Quiesced Snapshots: If the virtual machine is powered off or VMware Tools is not available, the Quiesce parameter is not available. If either is true, the virtual machine will be in powered on state. https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/8.0/vsphere-vm-administration/GUID-50BD0E64-75A6-4164-B0E3-A2FBCCE15F1A.html#:~:text=the%20virtual%20machine.-,Memory%20Snapshots,-The%20default%20selection

But, the question is a bit confusing because it does not indicate if the VM has several snapshots either

Apologies, but after further reviewing information, I found this article for vSphere version 8: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/8.0/vsphere-esxi-host-client/GUID-CA948C69-7F58-4519-AEB1-739545EA94E5.html "Revert to Latest Snapshot: Restores the parent snapshot, one level up in the hierarchy from the You are Here position. surely B

Ans: B Powered on (does not include memory) Reverts to the parent snapshot and the virtual machine is powered off. Powered off (does not include memory) Reverts to the parent snapshot and the virtual machine is powered off. https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/8.0/vsphere-vm-administration/GUID-50BD0E64-75A6-4164-B0E3-A2FBCCE15F1A.html
