The more specific a client’s plan, the more likely he or she is to attempt suicide. This is because specific plans indicate a higher level of preparation and intent. A previous unsuccessful suicide attempt does not reduce the risk of future attempts; in fact, it may increase it. Every threat of suicide should be taken seriously, regardless of the perceived intent behind it. Lastly, nurses should directly address the topic of suicide with clients who have attempted it, as avoiding the term can block important communication and understanding.
