In order to have the months appear as shown in the second chart, you should convert the date to Continuous. By converting the date field to a continuous field, Tableau will treat the dates as a continuous scale, which results in the dates being displayed more smoothly over time. This causes the bars of different years to be aggregated and displayed continuously rather than being grouped by each separate month.
