PMP Exam - Question 180

A laboratory is launching a new product, defined to be executed in eight iterations with a fixed release date. At the beginning of the second iteration, the project manager realizes that a significant regulatory feature is missing in the project backlog.

What should the project manager do?

Show Answer
Correct Answer: A,B

The project manager should ask the product owner to add the missing feature in the backlog. In an agile framework, the product owner is responsible for maintaining the product backlog, which includes adding new features, including regulatory requirements. This ensures that the feature is captured and can be prioritized appropriately. Once the feature is added, discussions about its impact on the project can take place, but the immediate step is to ensure it's recorded in the backlog.

You shouldn’t just change a scope without analyzing its impact even though it is regulatory.

That is the significant regulatory feature, so it is mandatory. PO needs to add to backlog first and then have a refinement meeting to discuss about the details

The feature has been missed from project backlog. PO is responsible for maintaining project backlog. So, PM must discuss with PO.

Stakeholders map out what the project priorities are early in the planning process so they should understand the impact of adding the regulatory feature. The Product owner owns the product backlog and should be asked to add the missing feature after discussion. That’s at least my understanding of Agile.

The.product owner might not have added it for a reason so there should be a discussion about it with stakeholders

B. Option A, asking the product owner to add the missing feature to the backlog, is not sufficient on its own because it does not address the need to assess the impact and consequences of adding the feature. option B is the most appropriate action, as it involves stakeholders in a discussion to evaluate the impact of adding the regulatory feature and enables the project manager to make an informed decision based on the insights and perspectives of relevant parties.

Ans is A. Based on the question, looks like it is a complete miss. The team missed to add the regulatory feature. Where is the question of inviting stakeholders and having discussions to find its impact. It is evident that it is a “significant regulatory nature”. So answer is A. The PO should add it right away into backlog. Regarding if capacity is there, if it will impact schedules etc are another part of the discussion, not covered in the question. So answer is A.

The best action to take when a significant feature is missing from the project backlog, especially a regulatory one, is to ensure that it is addressed and its implications understood.
