PMP Exam - Question 2

A team has just adopted an agile approach. During daily standup meetings, the team expressed concerns about task delays. The project leader worked with the product owner to get clarity on the features. The project leader asked the team to fast-track all product features to ensure delivery. Sprints are being completed but with either fewer features or low quality.

What should the project leader have done to ensure success?

Show Answer
Correct Answer: D

In an agile approach, success is often achieved by empowering the team to improve their processes, tools, and interactions to be more effective in delivery and removing impediments. Empowering the team fosters autonomy, accountability, and continuous improvement. The project leader should enable the team to address and resolve issues independently, which is consistent with the principles of agile methodologies that promote self-organizing and cross-functional teams.

B could be a good answer, because its a new Agile team, so the team is not well versed, so directing the team is a good option.

The answer should be B. The agile environment focuses on people rather than processes and tools, so empowering the team on processes and tools defeats the agile manifestoes. Option B seems most suitable as it discusses the empowerment of the project team to remove impediments and deliver timely.

As a servant leader, you are not supposed to stay away from the situation, by "asking team to do" or "direct" the team. Servant leaders should support the team, empower them and remove impediments.

D The project leader should have focused on addressing the root cause of the task delays rather than rushing to fast-track features. They could have facilitated discussions with the team to identify and resolve any blockers or misunderstandings. Additionally, they should have encouraged collaboration between the team and the product owner to ensure clear understanding of priorities and expectations, and to adjust the sprint scope accordingly to maintain quality. The issue is the lead is just fast tracking the work and not addressing the feed back from the rest of the team. For all we know, he is over looking gaps, scheduling too much work, etc. involve the team and use tools better processes, and root cause the issues before they become issues.

To ensure the success of the agile project, the project leader should have focused on proper backlog grooming, clear sprint goals, prioritization of features based on value, maintaining quality standards, and fostering team collaboration. By avoiding the temptation to fast-track features and instead emphasizing incremental delivery, the team would have been able to deliver high-quality, valuable product features while addressing delays and concerns in a more sustainable way.
