PMP Exam - Question 57

A project manager for an agile project is concerned that the team has been losing momentum over the last iterations.

Which two tools should the project manager use to analyze team performance? (Choose two.)

Show Answer
Correct Answer: ABC

To analyze team performance in an agile project, a Burndown chart and a Cumulative Flow Diagram (CFD) are the most appropriate tools. A Burndown chart tracks the remaining work in the iteration or release, displaying the team's progress over time and helping identify if they are on pace to complete the work. A Cumulative Flow Diagram shows the flow of work items across different stages, highlighting bottlenecks and inefficiencies by illustrating the number of tasks in each state (e.g., to do, in progress, done). These tools provide valuable insights into the team's performance, aiding in diagnosing issues and facilitating adjustments to improve momentum.

A. Burndown chart: The burndown chart tracks the progress of work completed against the planned work over time. It provides a visual representation of the team's progress and helps identify any deviations from the planned trajectory. By analyzing the burndown chart, the project manager can assess whether the team is falling behind, maintaining a steady pace, or accelerating, allowing them to take corrective actions if necessary. C. Cumulative flow diagram of completed features: The cumulative flow diagram tracks the flow of work items through different stages of the project. It provides a visual representation of the work in progress and can highlight bottlenecks or areas where work is piling up. By analyzing the cumulative flow diagram, the project manager can identify any blockages or inefficiencies that may be hindering the team's momentum and take steps to address them.

As team was performing fine in earlier iteration, the best way is to review backlog burn up. There may be chances that team is performing all the user stories, but in recent iteration UserStories might have increased. The best way is to refer backlog burn up chart

Fell for the trap myself. The explanation for C is wrong so it would not apply. Cumulative Flow diagram shows the progress of all three metrics (total, in progress and completed). Not just the completed features.

check the trend of what was done (burnup chart) and what is in progress (burndown chart) CFD will show the bottleneck not to track the progress

Burndown chart is to track progress and Product Backlog Burnup chart to track the progress made in scope.
