As of October 17, 2023, for users with a Microsoft 365 E3 subscription, the audit records in the unified audit log and Basic Audit are retained for 180 days. This is the new default retention period for Audit (Standard) logs.

Be careful, there has been an update here: With a Microsoft 365 E3 subscription, when using the unified audit log and Basic Audit, the audit records are retained for 180 days. This updated retention period applies to audit logs generated on or after October 17, 2023. Prior to this date, the retention period for Basic Audit was 90 days. It’s important to note that this is the default retention period and it can be extended up to 10 years with additional licenses.
