MS-900 Exam - Question 54

You are the Microsoft 365 administrator for a company.

The company runs SharePoint Server and Exchange Server in an on-premises datacenter. The site collection for the finance department is currently encrypted using third-party software.

You need to move as many services to Microsoft 365 as possible.

What should you do?

Show Answer
Correct Answer: B

The company needs to move as many services to Microsoft 365 as possible while considering the constraints related to the finance department's site collection, which is currently encrypted using third-party software. Since decryption and re-encryption of sensitive finance data could pose significant risks and complications, the most prudent approach is to leave the SharePoint data of the finance department users on-premises and migrate all other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes to Microsoft 365. This strategy ensures that the encryption requirements for the finance department are maintained while still moving a substantial portion of services to the cloud.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft exams. Could be worse. 15 years ago the questions read "which of the following is not the correct answer, choose all that apply" - A through Q. "You should not do this to fix the problem". So double negative, no clear direction on how many correct answers there were, and it went up to friggen Q!!!!

I feel like it is done by purpose. The Microsoft Learn materials and practice exams are just not enough to get ready for these types of questions (maybe it's enough for someone smarter / for one that uses Microsoft products on daily basis, but not for me). I have 4 certifications and this (hopefully) is going to be my 5th one, but this one has the most discussions about the correct answers, other certifications (the fundamental ones) are easier and mostly everyone agrees on 1 answer.

The correct answer for Microsoft is A - all data is encrypted in M365. But in real life there are steps and considerations ahead, like decryption, considering compatibilities etc., so the real life answer would probably B. But this does not matter - you need to view the world 100% from Microsofts perspective, therefore A has to be correct.

In my opinion, too many people answer these questions assuming knowledge *outside* of the question. You have to answer these questions based on the information give only in the question. It never explicitly states that the finance department actually use SharePoint or Exchange online (even though in reality they most definitely will) so the only answer is A

Option B is the most appropriate choice. Explanation: In this scenario, the site collection for the finance department is currently encrypted using third-party software. Microsoft 365 supports encryption at rest and in transit for data stored in SharePoint Online and Exchange Online. However, since the finance department is using a third-party encryption solution, it may not be possible to decrypt the data in Microsoft 365. Therefore, the best option is to leave the finance department's SharePoint data on-premises and migrate all other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes to Microsoft 365. This approach allows the organization to take advantage of the benefits of Microsoft 365 while maintaining the encryption solution for the finance department.

How is a third party encryption solution going to migrate to the cloud?

chrsdrhm
Jan 2, 2020

Correct answer is A... No, 3rd party encryption solution cannot be migrated to cloud. However, all M365 data is encrypted at-rest via BitLocker on Microsoft's servers and is encrypted in-transit; additional encryption options are available with AIP to further secure data independent of Microsoft. The idea here is that you don't need 3rd party encryption anymore, you could accomplish the same goal using M365-native.

Mar 21, 2023

he reason for choosing option D is due to the specific encryption requirements of the finance department's SharePoint site collection, which is currently encrypted using third-party software. Migrating this data to Microsoft 365 might not retain the same encryption settings, and it could potentially expose sensitive financial data. By leaving the finance department's SharePoint data and mailboxes on-premises, the company can continue to utilize the existing third-party encryption solution and maintain the desired security level for sensitive financial data. Meanwhile, migrating all other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes to Microsoft 365 allows the company to take advantage of the cloud services for the rest of the organization, satisfying the requirement to move as many services to Microsoft 365 as possible.

Correct it should be B based on the simple fact " the finance department is using a third-party encryption solution, it may not be possible to decrypt the data in Microsoft 365" hence it makes no sense to move sharepoint site collection data and its best to leave it on-premises

C. Leave mailboxes for finance department users on-premises. Migrate all other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes to Microsoft 365.

B. Leave SharePoint data for finance department users on-premises. Migrate all other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes to Microsoft 365: With this option, only the SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes outside of the finance department would be migrated to Microsoft 365. The finance department’s data would remain on-premises due to encryption concerns or other specific requirements.

olga_tenaOption: D

Both options, B and D, keep the finance department's data on-premises to ensure security and compliance. However, they have slight differences: B: Focuses on migrating all other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes to Microsoft 365 while specifically addressing the finance department's SharePoint data only. D: Specifies leaving both SharePoint data and mailboxes for finance department users on-premises. In this context, D is a better choice because it explicitly maintains the security of both the SharePoint data and the mailboxes for the finance department. This option comprehensively addresses potential security and compliance risks while allowing for a broader migration of other services to Microsoft 365. So, in my opinion the best option is D.

The finance department's SharePoint site collection is encrypted with third-party software, which could make migrating it to Microsoft 365 challenging or non-compliant without addressing encryption compatibility. To maximize migration to Microsoft 365 while maintaining the current encryption for the finance department, other SharePoint data and Exchange mailboxes can be migrated to the cloud, leaving the encrypted data on-premises.
