A Mist mesh network supports up to how many hops?
A Mist mesh network supports up to 1 hop. This is based on the documentation provided by Mist, which clearly states that single hop mesh is currently supported. While there may be confusion around the ability to deploy multiple access points, the term 'hops' specifically refers to the wireless transmission relay through one node to another, and in Mist's case, this is limited to a single hop.
Answers is D: Yes, it is possible to deploy multiple mesh relay APs on one mesh base AP. We recommend not to exceed 4 mesh relay APs, which we have tested in our environment.
Mist Mesh supports single hop and allows interconnect any traffic compatible with access point. (source: https://www.mist.com/documentation/mesh-configurations/)
A 1hop
Yes single hop mesh
A Is it possible to place “mesh relay_2” after “mesh relay_1?” No, currently this is not possible since at the moment we only support single hop mesh.
Answer is D. Mist recommends single hop, but can support (i.e has provision for) up to 4 hops.

Not quite, this document states up to 4 AP's connected as base AP. This redundancy allows to failover to another (amongst the aforementioned 4 AP's) base AP. The mesh is still a single hop mesh. Please review the document you kindly refer to on its first paragraph for the single hop concept and paragraph two for the 4 base AP redundancy per relay AP concept.
