CBAP Exam - Question 417

A business analyst (BA) finds that the solution service level agreement (SLA) cannot be met in one out of five identified scenarios, as there is a dependency on a requirement which is a part of a future release. How should the BA approach the solution limitation?

Show Answer
Correct Answer: CD

When a solution's service level agreement (SLA) cannot be met due to a dependency on a future requirement, the most appropriate action for the business analyst is to assess the impact on the business operations. This involves evaluating how the failure to meet the SLA will affect the business processes and the organization's ability to realize value from the solution. By understanding the impact, the business analyst can determine the severity and urgency of the issue and decide whether immediate actions are needed or if it can be addressed in a future release.

D - Assess Impact on business operations as per page 92 Impact analysis is performed to assess or evaluate the effect of a change. Traceability is a useful tool for performing impact analysis. When considering changes or additions to existing requirements, business analysts assess the impact of the proposed change by considering: • Benefit: the benefit that will be gained by accepting the change. • Cost: the total cost to implement the change including the cost to make the change, the cost of associated rework, and the opportunity costs such as the number of other features that may need to be sacrificed or deferred if the change is approved. • Impact: the number of customers or business processes affected if the change is accepted. • Schedule: the impact to the existing delivery commitments if the change is approved. • Urgency: the level of importance including the factors which drive necessity such as regulator or safety issues.

If one scenario cannot met the SLA for a requirement which is already bound to a future release, then the scope should be increased. Answer C

BA certainly cannot increase scope, this question is strictly under the Solution Limitation tasks, after identifying Internal Solution Component Dependencies which is what the question is hinged on, you investigate solution problems and finally carry out IMPACT ASSESSMENT. Ans C

Really C shouldn't be an answer as it's stated that this additional requirement will come in a future release. so , it's already part of the scope. Secondly, it's not clear the impact of the SLA breaching on the business operation. So based on the significancy of the issue , it should be the action either by reprioritize this requirement to come in an early release , or do nothing.

BABOK v3 - 8.3.4.3 Impact assessment Business analysts review identified problems in order to assess the effect they may have on the operation of the organization or the ability of the solution to deliver its potential value. This requires determining the severity of the problem, the probability of the re-occurrence of the problem, the impact on the business operations, and the capacity of the business to absorb the impact. Business analysts identify which problems must be resolved, which can be mitigated through other activities or approaches, and which can be accepted.

This may be done after identifying internal dependencies for solution. (BABOK v3 8.3.4.1)
