A router can use three main types of routes to establish a routing table: direct routes, which are directly connected to the router; dynamic routes, which are learned and updated automatically through routing protocols such as OSPF or BGP; and static routes, which are manually configured by an administrator. Aggregated routes combine several smaller routes into a single summary route, but they are not established directly by the router as primary methods.
