Question 27

Refer to the graphic.

The administrator has configured an IP address for Host A and Host B, but had forgotten to configure a default gateway.

What effect will this have on the hosts?

    Correct Answer: C

The hosts are part of different subnets: 172.16.0.0/16 and 172.16.1.0/16. Without configuring a default gateway, the packets from Host A destined for Host B (or vice versa) will not be routed to the router. However, with arp-proxy enabled on the router, the router can respond to ARP requests on behalf of the other subnet, thereby allowing communication between the two subnets even without a default gateway configured on the hosts.

I think neither is correct for that topology, especially because the same network cannot be configured on two different interfaces on the router. Routed proxy ARP allows communication between hosts whose IP addresses belong to the same network segment but different physical networks. In addition, the default gateway does not need to be configured on the hosts, facilitating management and maintenance. But this is not the case, because all elements networks belong to the same network segment.
