The COMMUNITY attribute is an Optional transitive attribute in BGP. Optional transitive attributes are those that may not be recognized by every BGP router, but if they are not understood, they are still passed along to the next router. COMMUNITY attributes are used to group destinations in a certain community and apply routing decisions based on the common community attribute.
