Degaussing is the best solution to securely remove data from hard drives containing PII. It uses a powerful magnetic field to disrupt the magnetic domains on the drive, making the data irrecoverable. Unlike drilling or incinerating, which physically destroy the drive, degaussing allows the hard drives to be repurposed. Low-level formatting does not guarantee complete data removal and could leave some data recoverable.
