PASCC stands for Polythionic Acid Stress Corrosion Cracking. For this type of corrosion to occur, the material must be sensitized. Sensitization happens when austenitic stainless steels or certain nickel alloys are exposed to temperatures between 427°C and 816°C, leading to the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, which makes the material susceptible to intergranular attack in the presence of polythionic acids.
Intergranular SCC that can occur in sensitized austenitic stainless steels and some Ni alloys (Alloy 800 and Alloy 600) when sulfide scale formed on the surface during operation is exposed to air and moisture.
