Decarburization is the process in which carbon is removed from the surface layer of steel, resulting in a layer that is largely free of carbide phases. Without carbon, what remains in the surface layer is essentially iron, since iron is the primary constituent of carbon steel. Therefore, with decarburization, carbon steel will become pure iron.
