When a router receives an IP packet and cannot find a match in the routing table for the destination IP address, it will drop the packet and send an ICMP Destination Unreachable message back to the source. This behavior is part of the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), which is used by network devices to send error messages and operational information.
Routers will look at the destination address on a packet, and try to find a match in its routing table. If it cannot find a match it will drop the packet and send an ICMP message to the source to tell it that is has no route to the destination network.
I think the packet is discarded
Never mind - I take it back
