Utility software includes antivirus programs that can protect your system from malware, such as corrupted files that might be attached to emails. Productivity software, virus software (itself), and encryption software do not address the problem of malicious files. Thus, having utility software would likely prevent the data on your hard drive from being erased by a corrupted file.
