With block data access, ONTAP owns the file system; with file data access, the host OS owns the file system. In block data access, the storage is managed at a lower level, meaning ONTAP handles the file system management and allows the host operating system (OS) to access raw storage blocks. For file data access, the host OS manages the file system on top of the storage, with ONTAP just providing network file services.
